Bagama’t kaiba sa kontinenteng kinaroroonan, mababakas pa rin ang dimensiyong nag-uugnay sa dalawang estado ng Pasipiko. Kung uungkatin ang kasaysayan, napakatibay ang ugnayang namamagitan sa Australia at Pilipinas sapul pa noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig o ang pagpapalaya sa Pilipinas laban sa puwersa ng mga Hapones nang tumakas tungong Australia sina Pangulong Manuel Quezon at buong pamilya noong Pebrero 19, 1942. Ngunit kung tutuusin, sa ganitong (...) kaganapan at alaala lamang nakapako ang ating kamalayan sa tuwing ginugunita natin ang relasyon ng dalawang bansa. Marami pa ang hindi nabubuksan at nabibigyan ng pansin sa kanilang pinag-isang kasaysayan at direktang ugnayan sa kadahilanang hindi ito napaglalaanan ng tuon at pagpapahalaga sa historiograpiya ng mga Area Studies o disiplinal na pag-aaral ng kasaysayan ng ibayong dagat. Itinuturing ang Trese (2021) bilang kauna-unahang Netflix anime series na mula sa Pilipinas, sa buong Timog Silangang Asya, at nasa labas ng Japan. Sa pagrerebyung ito, nilalayong maipamalas ang mataas na inklinasyon ng mga Pilipino sa kanilang mga alamat at mitolohiya. Bagaman hindi pa tapos ang serye, mahalaga pa ring tingnan ang kahalagahan ng Trese bilang holistikong paglalarawan sa imahe ng kultura at lipunang Pilipino. Sa pamamagitan ng labintatlong (13) malikhain at faktuwal na representasyong alegorikal ng Trese, nailatag ang saklaw (...) at ispektrum ng pagka-Pilipino. Ang rebyung ito ay nahahati sa apat na sub-kategorya na itinema dulot ng lumabas na interpretasyon – (1) paglalarawan sa pisikal na katangian at pananaw o diskursong ginamit, na nilapatan ng literary criticism; (2) paano ipinamalas ng Trese ang kaugnayan at pagpapahalaga nito sa Kasaysayang Pilipino; (3) paglalatag ng ilang aspektong antropolohikal at sosyo-kultural sa anyo ng sektoral na representasyon ng kasarian at pamilya at pagtatampok sa ilang mga kulturang popular ng Pilipinas; at (4) ang Trese bilang panimulang daluyan ng diskursong pampolitika-burukratika at isang malinaw na depiksyon ng kasalukuyang klimang pulitikal ng Pilipinas. This article aims to highlight the resounding issue regarding the pandemic caused by COVID-19 in the Philippines. In hindsight, it seems that contemporary Filipinos treat its spread as a new and first disease that our society has experienced. It only reflects the inexhaustible study of Filipino pathology. So there is a tendency for the Filipino government to tarnish or not take the future pandemic seriously because apart from the lack of knowledge about pandemics, it is possible that our society does (...) not know the challenges recognized and responses done to past diseases (which is even worse than COVID-19). So I utilized the neologisms that were popular these days of COVID-19 and no doubt had entered the body of modern Filipino vocabulary and corpora. It is ensured that through this comparison, the significance of previous diseases in the Philippines can be easily traced and understood. Although the motion of the argument is reversed; the present will be used to comprehend the past. With this move, it will be proven that the neologisms I have noticed are not that new. This study focuses on re-examining Hansen’s disease or leprosy that plagued the Philippines in the early 20th century. It has created great concern and fear among Filipinos. Nearly a hundred years later, COVID-19 emerged in the early 21st century. In addition to the comparative lens presented by this study, two diseases can be identified and compared in measuring the experiences of Filipinos. The masterful works Noli Me Tangere (1887) and El Filibusterismo (1891) can be considered as post-colonial writings because they are constantly studied and used as tools for raising awareness and remembering the violence and personal experiences of the Filipino society. This is an indirect description of the colonial period in the perspective of modern times. However, the teaching and appreciation of these writings become complicated because they are often neglected or otherwise considered as a subject that needs to be covered (...) or completed within half a year or in just one semester. As far as the culture of teaching is concerned, it will also be discussed as a basic concept — whether a dominant or emerging culture revolves around this situation. Three things are highlighted in this study: observations, situations, and introductory descriptions in the teaching of the two novels. Aside from observations and analyses, data were also gathered through a survey for teachers and students in selected schools in Marikina City, Metro Manila. (shrink)

It is quintessential to be acquainted with the complex cultural linkages between a nation and the globalized world— notably, the Philippines as a part of the Southeast Asian Region. The study centers on Filipino cuisine, academization, and its affinities. We may regard the concept of food and the act of partaking in it (i.e., eating) as mundane and ubiquitous in a way. Instead, we must view food and subsistence as a crucial part of cultural and historical inquiry. Some social scientists (...) and scholars dismiss the subject of food as a valuable source of tracing cultural and historical roots. Some people usually regard the recognition and intellectualization of food to Culinary Studies, but it is deemed limited. Truth be told, few to no literature sources reveres food and its role as significant in political, historical, and cultural discourse. This paper paves the way towards the intercultural relationship between the two regions, albeit clinging to unified cultural roots. Moreover, it may be interpreted as epistemological; nevertheless, it is essential to analyze food, subsistence, and diet through the lens of cultural history. The study can be defined the significance of Philippine cuisine in the Southeast Asian region’s macrocosmic space of food diversity. Consequently, the paper intends to present preliminary knowledge and investigation on the direct relationship between taste (aesthetics), food, and the expansion of the local concept of Kalutong Bayan. The researcher assumes that the contribution of his in-depth travels within the ten (10) countries across Southeast Asia (ASEAN) (2014-2018) led him to form potential linkages between what is being produced, served, and consumed may be considered vital in ascertaining historical roots of the Philippines and the entire region. Lehitimong gawain ito dahil bukod sa kontekstong nakaugat ang bayan sa ina/mater vis-à-vis patria, mahihinuha ring malaki ang pagkilala ng Supremong si Andres Bonifacio sa kadakilaan ng kababaihan sa panahon ng himagsikan. Sa kabila nito, masasabing may suliranin sa historiograpiyang Pilipino dahil isinasantabi ng ilang positibista at sexistang manunulat ang kolektibong gunita sa kababaihan bilang kasama ng (...) bayan. Kung kaya’t patuloy itong iwinawasto sa pagdaan ng panahon. Masusumpungan ito kung gagawing halimbawa ang kababaihan sa rebolusyong Pilipino. Naisasantabi sila bilang mga paksa ng pag-aaral o kung minsan, itinuturing na palamuti lamang na kailangang idugtong sa pangalan ng kalalakihan. Kaugnay ng suliraning ito kung kaya’t itinatampok sa pag-aaral na ito ang muling pagsipat sa apat na mahahalagang bagay: (1) kasaysayan ng kababaihang Pilipina noong dantaon 19; (2) pakikisangkot ng kababaihan sa Katipunan at himagsikan; (3) pagtingin ng Katipunan sa kababaihan; at (4) impluwensya ng Katipunan sa pagkilos ng kababaihan sa pagpasok ng dantaon 20. Mangyari pa, titingnan din ang muling pakikilahok ng kababaihan sa mga digmaang bayan sa panahon ng post-Katipunan. Hindi ito bagong pag-aaral kundi isang paglalagom sa mga naunang pag-aaral. Kakikitaan ang papel na ito ng mas matinding hamon at pagpursigi sa pagsusulat ng mga paksa na may kinalaman sa Araling Pangkababaihan at Araling Pangkasarian. Tunguhin ng papel ang holistikong kasaysayan ng kababaihan sa pakikisangkot nila sa Katipunan bilang mga kasama ng bayan. (shrink)

Sa halip, layunin pa ng artikulong ito na angkinin ang Tourism Studies at tangkaing maipasok sa talastasang F/Pilipino ang usapin ng turismo at paglalakbay na (...) direktang aapuhap sa tatlong espisipikong aspekto: (1) kalagayan ng turismo at paglalakbay sa Pilipinas; (2) pangunahing salik sa paglalakbay; at malaong itatawid sa (3) sosyo-kultural at politiko-ekonomikong kinahinatnan ng paglalakbay. Sa diwa ng binubuong Araling Pangmanlalakbay sa diwa ng Araling Kabanwahan, hindi lamang nito nilalayong maipakita ang ugnayan at/o pag-uugnay ng turismo at paglalakbay sa Pilipinas at Timog Silangang Asya. Bukod sa panunuring pangkalinangan, layunin ding maipakita ng Araling Pangmanlalakbay ang panunuring panlipunang nakasalig sa katarungan ng turismo at paglalakbay. Pinagtibay ng administrasyong Duterte ang pananangkapan sa mga birong itinuring na pampasiglang bilang sa tuwing kinakausap ng pangulo ang taumbayan sa midya. Kaya’t tila isang melodramatiko o mala-teledramang inaabangan ng mga manonood at tagapakinig ang bawat pahayag ni Duterte habang pinamamayani ng huli ang mga 'birong' nagpapatingkad sa impunidad ng karahasan sa kababaihan, misogynista, at sexismo. Sa ilang pagkakataon, literal na ibinida ng populistang pangulo ang kaniyang phallus o titing nakatayo bilang larawan ng pagiging lalaki, matapang, at malakas at upang (...) yurakan hindi lamang ang kababaihan ngunit para ipamukha ang 'kahinaan' ng mga kritiko. Kinalaunan, umusbong sa midya ang pagbabansag kay Duterte bilang 'Mang Kanor,' isang personalidad na ipinamamalas ang exhibisyonismo sa anyo ng mga pornograpikong bidyo. Sa ilang pagkakataon, isa ang paglalakbay sa hindi gaanong nabibigyan ng pansin sa pag-aaral ng lipunan, sa kabila ng pinagyayaman na itong matagal sa Kanluran at marahil isa ng ganap na diskurso. Mababakas ito sa kanilang pagpapakahulugan sa mga taong naglalakbay. Halimbawa nito ang mga Pranses na voyageur at Anglo-Amerikanong katumbas sa paglalakbay bilang trip, travel, at voyage (Almario (...) 2010, 1274-1275, 1325) at sa napakaraming kasingkahulugan gaya ng adventurer, commuter, migrant, passenger, pilgrim, sailor, tourist, drifter, excursionist, globe-trotter, itinerant, voyager, navigator, nomad, sightseer, tripper, vagabond, wanderer, expeditionist, jetsetter, at iba pa (Thesaurus 2022). Sa Pilipinas, madalas pa ngang gamitin ang mga Espanyol-Filipino na mga salita katulad ng biyahe (viaje); ekspedisyon (expedicion); nabegasyon (navigacion); at embarkasyon (embarcacion) (Almario 2010, 181, 322, 328, 806) –sa kabila ng mayaman ang mga Pilipino sa konseptong ito. Sa halos dalawang taong pananalasa ng COVID-19 sa buong daigdig, marami nang nabago sa kapaligiran at mobilidad ng mga tao sa bawat lipunan. Kinasapitan at pumalaot ang lahat sa tinurang Bagong Kadawyan (New Normal) (hiram mula kay Reyes 2020) —isang transisyong pantao na lubhang nagpabago sa mga kinasanayang gawi. Nariyan ang pagbabago sa edukasyon, paghahanapbuhay, libangan, at mga transportasyon. Sa kaso ng mga manlalakbay, salot ang idinulot ng pandemya sapagkat pinaralisa nito ang daloy ng turismo at libangang pandaigdig. Kanselado ang (...) lahat ng paglalakbay, limitado ang serbisyo ng mga pandaigdigang paliparan, at nagsasarahan ang mga prontera ng bawat bansa. Sa kaso ko bilang isang manlalakbay, naputol din pansamantala ang layuning pagaralan at turulin ang kahalagahan ng Asya sa Pilipinas at ang lugar ng Pilipinas sa Asya. -/- Sa aking mga naging paglalakbay bilang Manila Boy (lalaking nakatira sa Kalakhang Maynila) sa sampung bansa sa Timog Silangang Asya (2014—2018), marami akong gunita at alaalang maibabahagi sa katuturan ng mga Pilipino—panahong malaya at mayabong pa ang paroo’t paritong paggalaw ng mga tao. Mula ito sa aking mga karanasan at obserbasyon bilang manlalakbay kung bakit nakumpuni ang ganitong uri ng sanaysay at naratibong ulat. Mahalaga ang pagbabahaginang karanasan. Ayon sa kamamayapa pa lamang na teologo na si Jose de Mesa (2003), ang karanasan ng isang tao ay isang subhetibong pagpapakahulugan, interpretasyon, o pagtingin nito sa obhetibong realidad sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga pandama (de Mesa 2003). Marahil ito rin ang sumasambulat sa mga nais maging mag-aaral ng paham na si Salazar. Isang metapora ng kometa o isang bakunawa ang pagdating ng isang Dr. Salazar sa Sintang Paaralan partikular na sa Kagawaran ng Kasaysayan dahil pinagyaman niya/tinutulungang makaalpas (...) ang ningning ng aming kagawaran tungo sa mayamang pag-aaral sa kasaysayan. Bago matapos ang dantaon 19, umusbong ang mga kilusang mapagpalaya kontra kolonisador sa iba’t ibang kapuluan ng Pilipinas at Indonesia (mga bansang kabilang/kaugnay ng Dunia Melayu). Isa sa mga iginigiit na dahilan ng bawat bayan (negara ng Indonesia) ay ang malawakang reporma hinggil sa relihiyon/paniniwala – pagpapanatili, pagbabago, o di kaya’y pakikisangkot. Sapul pa noong panahong dati, patuloy nang pinahahalagahan ng bawat katutubong Malayo/Austronesyano ang kanilang paniniwala na malalim ang pagkaka-ugat sa kapangyarihan at impluwensiya ng kanilang kapaligiran at sabihin pa’y (...) pinamumunuan ito ng mga lider (i.e. babaylan para sa mga sinaunang Pilipino at pawang/dukun sa mga katutubong Indones). Sa pagpasok ng kolonisasyon ng sa mundo ng mga Melayu, nagkaroon ng malawakang pagkitil sa lipunan at mga katutubong paniniwala/tradisyon. Kung niyakap man nila ang ipinakilalang relihiyon ng mga dayuhan, nawalan naman sila ng pakikisangkot kung kaya’t nagbunsod ito sa pagbubuo ng mga kalat-kalat na kilusan. Sa kabila ng malalim na koneksyon ng mga katutubo sa kanilang lumang paniniwala, hindi nakapagtataka kung bakit katuwang nila ang kabuuang salik nito sa pagbubuo at adhikain ng mga kilusan. Ito ang direktang dahilan kung bakit sila binansagan ng mga Kanluranin bilang mga mesyaniko, kilyastiko, at panatiko. Itinatampok sa pag-aaral na ito ang komparatibong pag-aaral sa mga kilusang mapagpalaya na naka-ugat sa relihiyon noong kalagitnaan ng dantaon 19. In my essay “Chasing Waves: Reflection on Southeast Asian Fisherfolk (2021a),” I already featured the less documented experience of the socially marginalized. My essay focused on the personal narratives of Bruneian fishermen of Kampor Ayer, Brunei Darussalam (2016); the fishermen of Mui Ne, Vietnam (2017); and the Intha of Myanmar (2018), with whom I had the fortunate chance to converse with. However, my personal travel experience in the three countries only gave voice to “non-Filipino workers.” That is why in this (...) current essay, I will highlight the unique experience of the Filipinos themselves – in the form of migrant workers in Southeast Asia. I have interacted with and interviewed many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific; even in other countries where Filipino tourists were unfamiliar or visited, surprisingly happen to have OFWs. With that, it is unsurprising why Filipinos are articulated as globe-trotting people (Perdon 2014) and quasi-wandering people (San Juan 2009) because of their prevalence in the discourse of the global diaspora. In this essay, I will feature the stories of personal experiences of select Filipina workers in Southeast Asia, specifically in Malaysia (2014), Singapore (2014), and Cambodia (2017), extracted from my travel narratives from 2014-2018. The article intends to present untold narratives from Filipino overseas migrant workers that the author personally encountered and interviewed. Literature that primarily focuses on their quotidian lives is rarely discussed and written. The author used travel memoir as a primary method to describe his journey reflections while not neglecting academic inquiry relying on existing works of literature (secondary sources) to validate his observations. The author gathered significant pathways from his travels to engage in a historical search on the distinct and (...) diversified cultures formed and transformed by Filipino overseas migrant workers. -/- The scope and limitations of this paper are centered on Filipinos dwelling in particular countries in the Southeast Asian region as follows: Malaysia (2014), Singapore (2014), Cambodia (2017), Brunei Darussalam (2016), and Europe - solely focused on Spain (2018). This paper intends to contribute to the flourishing discipline of Diaspora Studies. Furthermore, it strives to offer significant literature on a particular sectoral field, Women's Studies. The paper also produced testimonial narratives that describe the intersectionality of Filipino women as migrant workers, except for the case of workers in Brunei Darussalam. -/- The author has ascertained a multitude of insights, realizations, and overlying themes. For instance, Filipino overseas migrant workers in Malaysia experienced common themes of violence and struggles; determining Filipino spaces in Singapore; establishing Filipino identity and culture in Cambodia; realized opportunities and challenges from the phenomenon of transnationalism of some migrant workers in Spain; and coping mechanisms of some male migrant workers in Brunei. On the one hand, such writings may not be considered groundbreaking work on the creation of academic narratives. On the other hand, the author contends such themes of opportunities, struggles, and sacrifices of Filipino migrant workers narratives are diachronic - continuous through time. (shrink)

Dahil hindi pasibong tinanggap ng mga katutubo ang ipinakikilalang dogma, inangkop nila sa kanilang kinabihasnang kultura ang pagtanggap sa Kristiyanismo. Makikita ang ganitong pag-angkop sa sistema ng paniniwala; iba’t ibang tradisyon; at (...) konsepto ng mga bagay-bagay. Ipinamalas din nila ang bersiyon ng pagsasama o sinkretismo sa sining ng arkitektura na makikita sa mga imprastraktura katulad ng cementerio. Dahil sa kulang at walang sapat na dokumentong naglalahad sa kasaysayan, ang dahilan kung bakit ilalatag at tatangkain sa pag-aaral na ito ang posibleng pagbubuo sa mga esensiyang bumabalot sa kabuuan ng sementeryo – mula sa kung sino ang gumawa, hanggang sa pagtukoy ng mga motibasyon at posibleng pagpapakahulugan sa lahat ng ito. Kung kaya’t itinatampok sa papel na ito ang paraan ng pagtukoy sa mga simbolo at interpretasyon bilang metodolohiya. Tatlong bagay ang tinitingnan sa pag-aaral: (1) posibleng katutubo ang mga simbolo na makikita sa libingan na nailalarawan ng mga kosmolohiya at penomenong bumabalot dito; (2) ang posibleng impluwensiya ng ibang kultura sa pagbubuo ng libingan; at (3) posibleng talaban ng dalawang magkaibang kultura sa pagbubuo ng sementeryo. This study investigates the relationship between personality traits and coping styles among college students in private higher educational institution. Hence, employing correlational design to assess the relationship between coping styles and personality of 150 college students. The statistical analysis reveals that the r coefficient of 0.54 indicates a moderate positive correlation between the variables. The p-value of 0.00, which is less than 0.05, leads to the decision to reject the null hypothesis. Hence, a significant relationship exists between coping style and (...) personality traits among fourth-year college students in a private state university. (shrink)

Knowledge, like other things of value, can be faked. According to Hawley (2011), know-how is harder to fake than knowledge-that, given that merely apparent propositional knowledge is in general more resilient to our attempts at successful detection than are corresponding attempts to fake know-how. While Hawley’s reasoning for a kind of detection resilience asymmetry between know-how and know-that looks initially plausible, it should ultimately be resisted. In showing why, we outline different ways in which know-how can be faked even when (...) a given performance is successful; and in doing so, we distinguish how know-how can be faked (no less than know-that) via upstream and downstream indicators of its presence, and within each of these categories, we’ll distinguish (in connection with detection resilience) both faking symptoms and (various kinds of) criteria. The unappreciated resilience of faked knowledge-how to successful detection highlights a largely overlooked dimension of social-epistemic risk – risk we face not just in our capacity as recipients of testimony, but in our capacity as both (would-be) apprentices and clients of knowledge-how. Jack Spencer argues we should reject a decision rule called MaxRat because it's incompatible with this principle: If you know that you will choose an option, x, and you know that x is better than every other option available to you, then it is permissible for you to choose x. I agree with Spencer that defenders of MaxRat should reject this principle. However, I disagree insofar as he suggests that he and orthodox causalists are in a position to accept it. (...) Both orthodox CDT and Spencer's own theory of rational choice are incompatible with the principle as well. It is surprising to realise, but all are agreed: it can be irrational to knowingly choose the best. (shrink)

Understanding consciousness and its place in the natural world is one of the principal targets of contemporary philosophy of mind. Australian philosophers made seminal contributions to this project during the twentieth century which continue to shape the way philosophers and scientists think about the conceptual, metaphysical and empirical aspects of the problem. After some scene setting, I will discuss the main players and their work in the context of broader developments in the philosophy of mind.

Epistemic relativists often appeal to an epistemic incommensurability thesis. One notable example is the position advanced by Wittgenstein in On certainty (1969). However, Ian Hacking’s radical denial of the possibility of objective epistemic reasons for belief poses, we suggest, an even more forceful challenge to mainstream meta-epistemology. Our central objective will be to develop a novel strategy for defusing Hacking’s line of argument. Specifically, we show that the epistemic incommensurability thesis can be resisted even if we grant the very insights (...) that lead Hacking to claim that epistemic reasons are always relative to a style of reasoning. Surprisingly, the key to defusing the argument is to be found in recent mainstream work on the epistemic state of objectual understanding. (shrink)

The philosophical significance of attitudinal autonomy—viz., the autonomy of attitudes such as beliefs—is widely discussed in the literature on moral responsibility and free will. Within this literature, a key debate centres around the following question: is the kind of attitudinal autonomy that’s relevant to moral responsibility at a given time determined entirely by a subject’s present mental structure at that time? Internalists say ‘yes’, externalists say ’no’. In this essay, I motivate a kind of distinctly epistemic attitudinal autonomy, attitudinal autonomy (...) that is relevant to knowledge. I argue that regardless of whether we are externalists or internalists about the kind of attitudinal autonomy that is relevant for moral responsibility, we should be externalists about the kind of autonomy that a belief must have to qualify as knowledge. The phenomenon of ambivalence is an important one for any philosophy of action. Despite this importance, there is a lack of a fully satisfactory analysis of the phenomenon. Although many contemporary philosophers recognize the phenomenon, and address topics related to it, only Harry Frankfurt has given the phenomenon full treatment in the context of action theory - providing an analysis of how it relates to the structure and freedom of the will. In this paper, I develop objections to Frankfurt's account, (...) all revolving around the charge that his account contains a serious ambiguity between willing and identifying. With such objections in place, I then develop an analysis that avoids the difficulties and ambiguities that Frankfurt's analysis is prey to. I briefly distinguish ambivalence from other types of internal conflict. This paper aims to offer conceptual clarification on the phenomenon of ambivalence, which will then allow for discussions about the normative merits and demerits of ambivalence, the effects of ambivalence on autonomous action, and methods of resolution of ambivalence. Aggregating individuals’ consistent attitudes might produce inconsistent collective attitudes. Some groups therefore need the capacity to form attitudes that are irreducible to those of their members. Such groups, group-agent realists argue, are agents in control of their own attitude formation. In this paper, however, I show how group-agent realism overlooks the important fact that groups consist of strategically interacting agents. Only by eliminating group agency from our social explanations can we see how individuals vote strategically to gain control of their (...) groups and produce collective attitudes we cannot make sense of if we treat groups as agents. A series of papers on different aspects of practical knowledge by Roderick Chisholm, Rudolf Haller, J. C. Nyiri, Eva Picardi, Joachim Schulte Roger Scruton, Barry Smith and Johan Wrede.

Empirical work has lately confirmed what many philosophers have taken to be true: people are ‘biased toward the future’. All else being equal, we usually prefer to have positive experiences in the future, and negative experiences in the past. According to one hypothesis, the temporal metaphysics hypothesis, future-bias is explained either by our beliefs about temporal metaphysics—the temporal belief hypothesis—or alternatively by our temporal phenomenology—the temporal phenomenology hypothesis. We empirically investigate a particular version of the temporal belief hypothesis according to (...) which future-bias is explained by the belief that time robustly passes. Our results do not match the apparent predictions of this hypothesis, and so provide evidence against it. But we also find that people give more future-biased responses when asked to simulate a belief in robust passage. We take this to suggest that the phenomenology that attends simulation of that belief may be partially responsible for future-bias, and we examine the implications of these results for debates about the rationality of future-bias. Orthodox causal decision theory is unstable. Its advice changes as you make up your mind about what you will do. Several have objected to this kind of instability and explored stable alternatives. Here, I'll show that explorers in search of stability must part with a vestige of their homeland. There is no plausible stable decision theory which satisfies Savage's Sure Thing Principle. So those in search of stability must learn to live without it.

Decision-making under normative uncertainty requires an agent to aggregate the assessments of options given by rival normative theories into a single assessment that tells her what to do in light of her uncertainty. But what if the assessments of rival theories differ not just in their content but in their structure -- e.g., some are merely ordinal while others are cardinal? This paper describes and evaluates three general approaches to this "problem of structural diversity": structural enrichment, structural depletion, and multi-stage (...) aggregation. All three approaches have notable drawbacks, but I tentatively defend multi-stage aggregation as least bad of the three. (shrink)

What is the biological function of perception? I hold perception, especially visual perception in humans, has the biological function of accurately representing the environment. Tyler Burge argues this cannot be so in Origins of Objectivity (Oxford, 2010), for accuracy is a semantical relationship and not, as such, a practical matter. Burge also provides a supporting example. I rebut the argument and the example. Accuracy is sometimes also a practical matter if accuracy partly explains how perception contributes to survival and reproduction.

“How can I, who am thinking about the entire, centerless universe, be anything so specific as this: this measly creature existing in a tiny morsel of space and time?” This metaphysically self-deprecating question, posed by Thomas Nagel, holds an insight into the nature of personhood and the ordinary ways we value it, in others and in ourselves. I articulate that insight and apply it to the phenomena of friendship, companionship, sexuality, solitude, and love. Although love comes in many forms, I (...) say, it always involves a sense of wonder at a finite creature thinking infinite thoughts. (shrink)

The norm of assertion, to be in force, is a social norm. What is the content of our social norm of assertion? Various linguistic arguments purport to show that to assert is to represent oneself as knowing. But to represent oneself as knowing does not entail that assertion is governed by a knowledge norm. At best these linguistic arguments provide indirect support for a knowledge norm. Furthermore, there are alternative, non-normative explanations for the linguistic data (as in recent work from (...) Van Elswyk). Direct arguments would rely on normative judgments about the permissibility or impermissibility of assertions with and without the speaker knowing the content asserted. John Turri's work experimental results purport to show that our norm of assertion is factive, and probably knowledge. But as a number of recent experimentalists (Kneer, Reuter and Broessel, Marsili and Wiegmann) have shown, Turri's results rely on the problemmatic use of 'should' as in 'Maria should assert that she owns a 1990 watch.' Correcting for this, these experimentalists provide strong evidence that our norm of assertion is not factive. The standard reply to evidence like this from the assertion of unlucky falsehoods is the excuse maneuver. But Marsili and Wiegmann, following Turri's protocol for testing for excuse validation, show that participants who judge that assertions unlucky falsehoods are permissible are not guilty of excuse validation. Given our current understanding of the experimental evidence, knowledge is not our norm of assertion. (shrink)

In this chapter, we consider ethical and philosophical aspects of trust in the practice of medicine. We focus on trust within the patient-physician relationship, trust and professionalism, and trust in Western (allopathic) institutions of medicine and medical research. Philosophical approaches to trust contain important insights into medicine as an ethical and social practice. In what follows we explain several philosophical approaches and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in this context. We also highlight some relevant empirical work in the section on (...) trust in the institutions of medicine. It is hoped that the approaches discussed here can be extended to nursing and other topics in the philosophy of medicine. (shrink)

Common everyday materials such as textiles, foodstuffs, soil or skin can have complex, mutable and varied appearances. Under typical viewing conditions, most observers can visually recognize materials effortlessly, and determine many of their properties without touching them. Visual material perception raises many fascinating questions for vision researchers, neuroscientists and philosophers, yet has received little attention compared to the perception of color or shape. Here we discuss some of the challenges that material perception raises and argue that further philosophical thought should (...) be directed to how we see materials. (shrink)

There is a widespread, popular view—and one I basically endorse—that Nietzsche is, in one sense of the word, a nihilist. As Arthur Danto put it some time ago, according to Nietzsche, “there is nothing in [the world] which might sensibly be supposed to have value.” As interpreters of Nietzsche, though, we cannot simply stop here. Nietzsche's higher men, Übermenschen, “genuine philosophers”, free spirits—the types Nietzsche wants to bring forth from the human, all-too-human herds he sees around him with the fish (...) hooks, as he says, of his books—seem to engage in what looks like valuing. These free spirits are supposed to revalue the old values—revaluing, as is clear from the texts, is not simply to remove the old values from circulation (Nietzsche uses “umwerten” and not “entwerten”)—and they are supposed to create new values. And, of course, Nietzsche himself, free spirit that he is, takes on the task of revaluing all values and seems to assert many a strident evaluation. So we need to say more here. What are Nietzsche and his free spirits up to when they engage in what looks, for all the world, like a practice of valuing? What is the practice of valuing Nietzsche is recommending for his free spirits? I argue for two claims: (i) First, we end up facing an interpretive puzzle when we attempt to explain how Nietzsche's free spirits are supposed to engage in a practice of valuing. (ii) Second, we can solve the interpretive puzzle by taking Nietzsche's free spirits to be engaged in a fictionalist simulacrum of valuing. (shrink)

Contractarians aim to derive moral principles from the dictates of instrumental rationality alone. But it is well-known that contractarian moral theories struggle to identify normative principles that are both uniquely rational and morally compelling. Michael Moehler's recent book, *Minimal Morality* seeks to avoid these difficulties by developing a novel "two-level" social contract theory, which restricts the scope of contractarian morality to cases of deep and persistent moral disagreement. Yet Moehler remains ambitious, arguing that a restricted version of Kant's categorical imperative (...) is a uniquely rational principle of conflict resolution. We develop a formal model of Moehler's informal game-theoretic argument, which reconstructs a valid argument for Moehler's conclusion. This model, in turn, enables us to expose how a successful argument for Moehler's contractarian principle rests on assumptions that can only be justified by subtle yet significant departures from the standard conception of rationality. We thus extend our understanding of familiar contractarian difficulties by showing how they arise even if we restrict the scope of contractarian morality to a domain where its application seems both promising and necessary. We show that the problem lies not in contractarians' immodest ambitions but in the modest resources rationality can offer to satisfy them. (shrink)

Political liberals ask citizens not to appeal to certain considerations, including religious and philosophical convictions, in political deliberation. We argue that political liberals must include a demanding requirement of intellectual modesty in their ideal of citizenship in order to motivate this deliberative restraint. The requirement calls on each citizen to believe that the best reasoners disagree about the considerations that she is barred from appealing to. Along the way, we clarify how requirements of intellectual modesty relate to moral reasons for (...) deliberative restraint. And we argue against attempts to weaken our requirement of intellectual modesty by emphasizing those moral reasons. (shrink)

Public discussions of political and social issues are often characterized by deep and persistent polarization. In social psychology, it’s standard to treat belief polarization as the product of epistemic irrationality. In contrast, we argue that the persistent disagreement that grounds political and social polarization can be produced by epistemically rational agents, when those agents have limited cognitive resources. Using an agent-based model of group deliberation, we show that groups of deliberating agents using coherence-based strategies for managing their limited resources tend (...) to polarize into different subgroups. We argue that using that strategy is epistemically rational for limited agents. So even though group polarization looks like it must be the product of human irrationality, polarization can be the result of fully rational deliberation with natural human limitations. (shrink)
